  • Reading of The Grass Widow's Son

    30 June 2012

    The Reading
The reading went well.  The talkback was exceptional.  The audience and the actors were discussing the themes with me well after the reading.  They didn't miss anything, not even my use of names.  The best kind of audience and actors one could hope for at a reading.   Everyone wants to see it on stage!!

    The Room
However, because the building manager did not have me on the schedule, I was put in a room that most of the people coming to the reading weren't able to find.  Yeah.  It was a beautiful room though, a really intimate setting which I believe made the audience members more relaxed and willing to share their thoughts.

    The Cast
After finding out I had to cast the play two days before the reading (yeah) with only hours before the reading to go over the script, losing and gaining an actress an hour before call time, I was still humbled by the fact that one actress volunteered her boyfriend to stand in till all the actors arrived; turned out he was really good so I asked him to read the descriptions so I could listen to the whole play without distraction.

    The Program
Then there was getting program printed - Howard University does not have any place a visitor can print.  Yeah.  So , it's miles off campus to FedEx I went.  And that was an adventure, too...

All in all, the talkback made the drama worth it...  Though less of it would have definitely been welcome.

  • DC Black Theatre Festival

    24 June 2012
Landed in DC yesterday morning after taking the Red Eye (not suggested unless you have no other choice).  Jetlagged, hungry, excited and annoyed (lack of sleep does this for me), I spent most of yesterday securing housing (thank God it worked out), buying towels and other toiletries, learning to ride the train (good thing I've been to New York, made it less stressful).   The students that I have met so far on the campus are lovely.  Made a friend.  Hoping for a fantastic experience.  THE GRASS WIDOW'S SON will be read on Thursday, 28 June at 7pm at the Howard University Blackburn Center.
